Produced in abundance in rural areas, vegetable oil (olive oil) and animal fat (suet) were used to light homes from an early date.
Vases, old lucerne lamps and ceramic lamps would be succeeded by metal lamps with a small reservoir for oil in which a cotton wick was soaked.
From the 20th century onwards, the oil lamp prevailed and remained in use at Outeiro de Polima until at least 1964 when electric lighting was introduced.
