Located at the bottom of the house, the pen was used to accommodate larger animals such as cattle which were used for milk production or to help with the more gruelling rural tasks like ploughing, sowing, harrowing and the carrying of heavy loads.
Conscious of the animal's toil and to avoid it falling asleep, the herdsman encouraged it with the poetic and very enchanting Cantar ao Bois (The Oxen's Song), which continues to echo across the land today.
